Position Summary

The Scale-Up Engineer is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of chemical process systems within a chemical manufacturing environment. This role focuses on successfully bringing laboratory chemical processes to manufacturing scale production. The Scale-Up Engineer collaborates closely with R&D, production, maintenance, and quality teams to drive process excellence while ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) standards.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design, maintain, and optimize chemical process systems throughout the site.
  • Collaborate with R&D and lead the transfer of processes from laboratory scale to pilot and manufacturing scale production.
  • Perform calculations to safely and efficiently specify heating and chilling systems, rupture disc and pressure relief devices, vessel design, and fluid movement using pumps and other controls.
  • Prepare documents including PFD’s, P&ID’s, Batch Records and SOP’s
  • Hands-on operation in collaboration with Manufacturing personnel for new processes and procedures.
  • Develop, implement and train personnel on Standard Operating Procedures for chemical processes.
  • Provide Technical support to Manufacturing and Operations teams, including process and equipment troubleshooting, implementing corrective actions and occasional operational support
  • Monitor process performance and analyze key process parameters to ensure operations are within optimal targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (production, maintenance, safety, and quality) to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Participate in process safety reviews, including HAZOP, Risk Assessments and Job Observations
  • Ensure all process systems and designs comply with company EHS policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Process design considerations include safety to all personnel and adhering to all environmental regulations.
  • Support capital and improvement projects — including design, scope definition, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis and reliability initiatives to reduce downtime and improve plant efficiency.
  • Will require occasional operation shift coverage outside standard work hours
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Required Experience & Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, or related field.

Experience Qualifications – Required(R)/Preferred(P):

Specific Experience (Required):

  • 5 years of experience in a chemical, petrochemical, or related manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient in Excel and Word.

Other Experience/Competencies (Preferred):

  • Hands-on experience with process optimization, control systems, and plant operations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation, control systems, and data analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as reactors, heat exchangers, distillation columns, and pumps.
  • Proficiency with process modeling and simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS, ChemCAD).

Compensation

The salary range for the position of Scale-Up Engineer is $75,000 - $105,000. Many factors go into determining employee pay within the range including prior experience, current skills, location/labor market, internal equity and other factors as permitted by law.

This salary range is provided in good faith and is intended to display the value of the company's base pay compensation for all statewide locations across the United States. Salary is dependent on a multitude of factors, including but not limited to the physical worksite location, candidate's skill set, level of experience, education, and internal peer compensation comparisons.
